What Are “Conflicts” in Commercial Media?
Do you work in commercial media?
You may have seen resumes that include the phrase “Conflicts Available Upon Request.” But what does it really mean? We’re here to break down this important résumé detail, explain why it matters, and show you how to position yourself properly for every opportunity!
What Are “Conflicts” in Commercial Media?
In the commercial world, a “conflict” refers to a brand or product that you’ve already worked with.
For example:
If you’ve been in a Pepsi commercial, you may not be eligible to work on a Coca-Cola spot.
A voiceover for a Ford campaign might prevent you from being considered for a Toyota ad.
These conflicts exist because brands don’t want to share the same talent with their competitors.
“Conflicts available on request" acknowledges that the actor is aware that they may not be able to take a role from a competing brand without disclosing a specific list of prior jobs. It sends a clear message to casting that an actor is willing to provide a list of these "conflicts" privately to a casting director if asked, rather than listing them on their resume.
The benefit here is that it allows you to be considered for new roles without appearing to have too many potential conflicts upfront. Further, you’re communicating that the CD can check for any clashes between your past work and a new opportunity.
It tells potential employers: I’m informed, I’m prepared, and I’ll provide details if necessary!
