Instagram Highlight: Teen Accounts
Did you know that Instagram has account styles that are designed to protect kids online? If your child is 13-17 years old, they qualify for an Instagram Teen Account. Instagram Teen Accounts are protected by default, with settings built in to encourage a healthy relationship to social media.
Private by default
Accounts are invisible to anyone not pre-approved by the teen. Teens under 16 need a parent's permission to make their account public.
Strict messaging
Teens can only be messaged by people they follow or have previously messaged.
Restricted interactions
Teens can only be tagged or mentioned by people they follow.
Sensitive content filtering
Teens won't see content related to self-harm, violence, or nudity.
Time limit reminders
Teens are encouraged to leave the app after 60 minutes of daily use.
Sleep Mode on by default
Notifications are muted between 10 PM and 7 AM.
Parental controls
Parents can approve or deny their teen's requests to change settings, and soon will also be able to change settings directly to be more protective. Parents can get insights into who their teens have been chatting with in the past seven days and set total daily time limits for Instagram usage.Age-based distinctions
Teens under 16 can't change settings to less restrictive options without a parent's permission. Teens aged 16–17 also have the protections but don't need parental permission to override them.Age verification efforts
Instagram is also building technology to proactively find accounts that belong to teens even if the account lists an adult birthday, and will place those teens into the same Teen Account protections automatically.
