Google Knowledge Panels

Recently, we've received questions from clients about a feature on Google's search engine known as the Google Knowledge Panel. The Knowledge Panel is an excellent tool for increasing your relevance in search engines, and can help increase traffic to your website and social media platforms. In this post, we are going to detail what exactly the Knowledge Panel is and how you can go about claiming it.

1. What is a Google Knowledge Panel?
A google knowledge panel is a square block of information that appears to the right of search results when you google a well-known artist, performer, actor, or any other public figure. Below is an example:

A Google Knowledge Panel sources information from all over the web into a concise and easy to read format. It can contain personal information, links to websites and social media pages, credits, related people, and more.

Can I create a Google Knowledge Panel for myself?
No, you cannot. Google automatically creates these Panels for actors and noteworthy people based on searches and links that exist all across the internet. If you have a significant following or some noteworthy credits, it is possible that you already have a panel out there. If this is the case, then you can claim the panel.

Why should I claim my Google Knowledge Panel?
When you successfully claim your panel, you will have the ability to edit and control some of the content that appears when people search for you on Google. This means you can correct any misleading information, add new photos, and add any links you want people to see. You can also tailor what personal information pops up right away. Keep in mind that all information on the panel is sourced from other websites. If there is anything that shows up on the panel that you don't want to be there, you may need to make changes on another site or profile.

How can I claim my Google Knowledge Panel?

Technically, all you need in order to claim your panel is to have a Google account (Gmail/YouTube) and be able to prove that you are the person in the panel (or someone authorized to represent the person in the panel). Having a Google account is easy enough, but the verification process can be tricky. In our experience, what Google asks for as verification seems to vary case by case. Sometimes you just need to log in to an official profile such as Instagram or Twitter through Google's portal. Sometimes, you need to upload a screenshot showing you have editing privileges on certain platforms. In some cases, our clients have been required to prove ownership of their domains by inputting specific DNS code. If you need any help at all with this step, please reach out to us and we will get it done for you!

I don't see a Knowledge Panel when I Google myself. Can I do anything to get Google to make one for me?

While there is no easy way to get Google to make a panel, there are a couple things you can do in order to improve your chances. One way is to increase the SEO on your website so that it appears in more Google searches. Another is to increase your followers and engagement on your official social media platforms. Finally, the most effective way to secure a panel is to book a high-profile gig!
